The Ex-school

From the collection

The Experimental School of Arts was established by the artist Poul Gernes and art historian Troels Andersen as an alternative to the Royal Danish Academy of Arts in Copenhagen in 1961. The so-called Ex-School developed from a revolutionary studio collective, where there was no difference between pupils and teachers, to the most important Danish artist group in the 1960s. The school influenced Danish avant-garde art in the 1960s, which is characterized by experimental painting, printing and sculpturing, as well as public interventions in the shape of happenings, films and publications.

The exhibition shows some of the most important works from the Ex-School’s active period in combination with later works by the school’s representatives, among others by Per Kirkeby, Peter Louis-Jensen, Richard Winther, Bjørn Nørgaard, Poul Gernes, Roger Martyn Pring, Lene Adler Petersen and John Davidsen.

The exhibition is on display in the east wing of the museum.
